RESEARCH
From the deep sea to our agricultural land
Winnie's research focus has been on the sources and flows of plastic pollution from land to sea, and their environmental effect.
Bio-Plastic- Risk
University of Plymouth
Do biodegradable plastics, biodegrade under different environmental conditions? What effects do they have on marine and terrestrial species and ecosystems?
The NERC-funded project, Bio Plastic Risk, will address these questions, establishing the environmental fate and ecological effects of biodegradable plastics - often proposed as an alternative to conventional plastics
eXXpedition Round the World
University of Plymouth
A pioneering, all-women sailing voyage and research mission which set out to circumnavigate to reveal the 'unseen' microplastic pollution in the global ocean- from shorelines to gyres.
Connecting land and ocean research to better inform on the flows of waste, and apply solutions-based thinking to explore interventions.

We worked with 156 multidisciplinary women from 38 countries while delivering this program .
Terrestrial borne litter in the marine environment
University of Plymouth
A report commissioned by DEFRA to provide a summary of evidence on the sources of terrestrial borne litter and the pathways by which these may enter the marine environment.
Microplastics in the Deep Sea Ecosystem,
Scottish Association for Marine Science
The quantities of microplastics ingested by deep-sea organisms, and present in sediment and the water column >2000m deep in the North Atlantic Ocean were assessed.

Using invertebrate collections and sediment cores the chronology and deposition of plastic polymers in the deep-sea ecosystem were also examined.
